New Year resolutions are a pretty popular annual tradition where goals are set for the upcoming year.
However, most goals will end up down the drain soon after we make them. If you are hoping to keep up with your resolutions this year, here are a few tips to guarantee New Year resolution victory!
Set attainable goals for yourself.
Aiming high and challenging yourself is great, but sometimes it’s best to keep your goals closer in reach in order to not become overwhelmed and give up.
One way you could do this is to start with 3-5 specific goals instead of many general goals.
Be sure your resolutions are measurable.
Making sure you can measure and track your resolutions is important because it’s unlikely that you won’t run into a few rough patches throughout the year in attempt to maintain your goal.
If your goal is measurable then you can keep track of your progress and adjust your actions as needed.
Example: Instead of ‘In the New Year I will try to meditate more’, use ‘In the New Year I will try to meditate every morning for 15 minutes’. This way your goal is clearer and easier to assess.
Work with a timeframe.
To achieve your resolutions, it’s really helpful to set goals within the goals. Planning a general timeframe for them helps to keep you on the path you want.
Also keep in mind that you don’t have to start on the very first day of January, depending on the goal. Your resolutions could be anywhere from exercising every single day that year, to just having a holiday gathering that year. It’s up to you!
Write the resolutions down.
Be sure to create a list of your resolutions to be clear with yourself. This will also ensure that you don’t forget any!
Along with each goal, you can also brainstorm action steps to achieve it, or how you will consistently keep it up.
Anticipate the struggles.
Oftentimes as soon as there is a setback, we may end up caving. Anticipating these setbacks can help you feel less discouraged when they arise.
You can do this by recognizing that experiencing setbacks is part of the process, and acknowledging that it’s okay for them to happen. This way, you can overcome and grow from the bumps in the road.
Being successful with your resolutions can definitely be a challenge, so be sure this is something you want and something you are willing to commit to.
That being said, don’t be afraid to fail! Learn from those mistakes, and it’s never too late to try again. You got this!
